In October 2012 Microsoft released their new OS, called Microsoft 8. Like several previous releases, it's available in two version: 32bit and 64bit. I think many of you know about this System, some of you probably have Windows 8 installed, but I think it's good idea to inform you about this, how our favourite games from the Battlestations series are working under control of Windows 8.
For our test, we used Athlon X3, 4GB Ram DDR3, HDD SSD SATA3 Kingston and Windows 8 64 bit, and there are results:
In the beginning I started with Battlestations: Midway. Installation went smooth, then I copied folder with my settings and saved games from older Windows to the Documents folder, placed in Users folder. Next I was trying to launch game, but I got message instead. DirectX bla bla.dll is missing. Of course I forgot to install newest version of DirectX 9.0c. I know this from previous Windows. If you don't have it, you can download Web installer of DirectX 9.0C from there: Microsoft Support Site (please choose new empty folder, where you want extract downloaded files, because this installer will unpack many Direct X install files directly to the location you choose. After this find and run DXSetup).
After installation I launched game again. Eidos logo, splash screen, Menu, Single Player mission. Looks very good and working well. Okay, I launched Gameranger and I made a quick test for Multiplayer game. Both host and guest working correct. The final result: Battlestations Midway working under Windows 8 64 bit correctly and without any problems. Just remember about DirectX 9.0c and the world of Midway battles is your!
Next I found my Battlestations: Pacific DVD. I inserted it into DVD-Rom and launched installer. Installation went smooth just like the installation of Midway. Okay, start. Bah...problem with XLive.dll library. I found it and next I copied it into Windows/System32 and Windows/SysWOW64 folders (it is neccessary if You are using 64-bit version of Windows). Next I launched game, the Eidos logo appeared, next splash screen and game freezed. After waiting 2 minutes I decided to force closing it. I tried it again and again but no success, game loading stopped on splash screen and no menu appears. After this someone sent a solution to me. It is neccessary to wait, until Installer of Pacific installing Microsoft .NET Framework and Games for Windows - LIVE. In case of problems, you need to download it and install manually. However, after installation of .NET 3,5 and GfWL Battlestations: Pacific is working correctly. Without this software Battlestations: Pacific will not works. The final result: new Windows 8 is not a problem for Battlestations: Pacific players.
