Since december 2012 Battlestations: Midway is supported by GameSpy no longer. The only one possibility for Midway players is GameRanger. Please visit www.gameranger.com, download Gameranger client and make new account. You can find other Midway players in the Gameranger rooms. BS:M patch 1.1.1 is required to play online battles. Iowa Mission Pack and Midway Modders Mappacks 1 and 2 are recommended.

new unit ideas

new unit ideas

Okay lately people have been posting brand new unit ideas on threads where they don't belong. One or Two threads have been made for this topic but I notice they have falling off the edge a little. Post your new unit ideas here so that Tipsy or someone who is working on making new units can see them! (If you can post a 3D model of your ideas to help out the new unit guys)

Well, thats the list as of now, and we have finally reached 300 units!

The following units we CAN'T do, due to the limitations of the game engine:
Ohka piloted bomb
Kaiten manned torpedo
DC-3 (As an offensive unit, but it can be used as a target for a mission.  I think i just had an idea for another map!)

Triviaman, You give us really ambitious objective. I hope this day will come, but today we still waiting for a solution - how to add first unit.

Re: new unit ideas

Thanks.  Forgive me, its just that with so many suggestions all over the place, it would be easier if they were all compiled into one neat and organized list (I write fact sheets as a hobby, so carefully organized lists are a no brainer for me)

However, I have a feeling that if we are going to get new units into Midway, we are going to need either:

1. To get help from one of Midway's original programmers, since he/she would know the entire technical layout of the game

2. get help from an expert computer programmer, one who completely, and entirely understands the technical layout and function of the game, so that units can be introduced

Re: new unit ideas

Now I contacted Lehel Seres or senior technical artist at Eidos Hungary and same with Mike Oldman asking for help on adding units to BSM  by e-mail after no response at Eidos BS site. I recieved absolutely no response from Seres and Mike Oldman responded with an e-mail saying that unofficial modding of the game would recieve no help from Eidos and same with BSP so forget about help from Eidos it was a nice way of saying we don't care.
Choice number 2 might work but its possible to create units as Tipsy and Gaming have done it. All there needs to be done is make an mmod file and just replace the original with it and adding a unit should work but we can't create mmod so this is a theory for now.

Re: new unit ideas

We cant even be certain that an MMOD file is even associated with any form of basic programming until we open it up, if we ever open it up. In fact it could be just as easy as... say doing what we have been doing to add maps, or on the other hand it could be a complex code.

Also the list idea seems pretty neat way to organize all kinds of ships that can be added if we ever figure this out, in fact ship classes doesn't have to pertain to the pacific theater, if we ever figure this out we could possibly add ships from any nation in theater. However there is a limitation, don't forget the Midway game engine can only go so far. So things like paratroopers jumping from C-17 skytrains or unleashing Baka bombs or Suicide torpedo's wont be possible.

Re: new unit ideas

Yes and not knowing is the main problem and opening the file but again this is not going to be easy work and creating maps are not very easy too Tpsy. However an mmod file is roughly the same size as a 3ds or Lightwave file. However there also device, bullet, and the unit itself mmod files. Also I agree with not making Baka bombs and suicide torps as changing the game engine is not easy as you know.
Edit: Possibly not Trivia

Re: new unit ideas

Pretty much yes except the skytrain we can have but its mostly going to be a nice target to shoot at ag, or a nice deco to stare at... or... yea.

In short the midway engine doesn't have the capability to do those kind of units.

Katarya I meant the coding behind making maps is fairly easy, of course the process is long and boring.

Re: new unit ideas

The C-47 (your DC-3) is already in the game, the thing is though it only appears in the tutorial missions, so I thought I'd grab a pic of it to show you.

http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/8436/looki.jpg

However I was extremely surprise to see this plane here! In fact I didn't even know they had this unit in the game!

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/3789/looki2.jpg

The kingfisher isn't even mention anywhere and only appears on two tutorial mission!

Re: new unit ideas

They look nice but perform like a granny trying to get out of a wheel chair, poor maneuverability and poor armor.

The Kingfisher is worse compared to both the Pete and Jake. its faster then the Pete but has horrible maneuverability, its like flying a B-17 in a single engine plane.

The C-47 is a little better, lacks weapons and requires escort to get from point A to point B, has just about as good armor as a G3M and just as fast. Had some problems try to get it to take off cause it has a very low acceleration gain rate, so I had to double it just to get it to take off ao

  • Legendary Da : Hi everyone, I have one (or two) quick question about BS:M modding. I try to figure out sp mapmaking, and my first act on it was to convert a MP map to SP. However I can only play as Allies in those maps. What parameter do I have to change to play those maps as Japanese in the respective map .mpak (And where is the parameter I have to change?)?
  • N_Trainz : G'day mates, I just wanted to let those who use Windows 10 and also for those who are having troubles getting the game launching because of Games for Windows LIVE, I made a tutorial of how to get it working successfully again like on Windows 8.1. Its on my channel and here's the link to the video. «link»
  • Mokeo67 : The dictator, I downloaded the mmod2txm and I added four slots to the fletcher and a couple to the lexington. Thanks for the help though.
  • The Dictator : Makeo67 i've explained how to find the unused slots in the topic and the mmod2txm it's a program that has been shared. However there aren't so many ships with unused platforms and sme of them are in wrong positions and for move them you need to know how to change the mmod file. But if you know how to do it you can make new platfors as you want. I've shared the south dakota disposition and this one is the most intersting in my opinion
  • N_Trainz : Well it looks like we have spammers again
  • Mokeo67 : No problem Thanks for the help
  • Axis_Crusher : Not really
  • Mokeo67 : Ok thanks anyway. Do you know who does?
  • Axis_Crusher : Unfortunately I don't deal with that part of modding
  • Mokeo67 : Sorry forgot the link. «link»
  • Mokeo67 : This is the forum topic I meant. The dictator said he found the unused slots in the TXM file obtainable with the mmod2txm, what is this and is it available to use.
  • Axis_Crusher : This is your best bet: «link»
  • Mokeo67 : Also I saw on the forum that ships have unused platform slots. How do I use these?
  • Mokeo67 : I tried changing the bogue class carrier to a yorktown class in the phillipene sea mission and one of two things happened. The mission either didnt change or the game crashed.
  • Axis_Crusher : No problem
  • Mokeo67 : That is what im talking about. Ill have a look at it later thanks for the help
  • Axis_Crusher : specific mission’s 3_scene mpak file by working on the .lua file. There is where the bonus unit is actually added into the mission (by the script). I haven't tried it myself so good luck.
  • Axis_Crusher : I assume you are talking about the bonus units that you unlock for certain missions by completing previous ones (like the B - 25’s in the 2nd Battle of Guadalcanal). The bonus units are unlocked by completing certain objectives in the campaign - so that is linked to your campaign progress. Since that cannot be altered you must look at the missiontree.lua file. This is where the unit will show up unlocked on the mission screen. There are references to allunitslock. Also you will have to edit the
  • Mokeo67 : Thank you I will look in this file. I did unlock all the campaign missions, all you have to do is delete the text after 'prerequisite' and it will unlock. But I havent figured out how to unlock the bonus units.
  • Axis_Crusher : I also prefer it being off, just as most of the BSM community. Most players, however prefer repair to be enabled so that is what we should do. Most of our maps it will be disabled through the script however. If you want to play with the game's repair settings you can find it under shipglobals.lua
