Battle of Savo Island

Battle of Savo Island

Triviaman-Beast Map Designs is pround to present a map that has been in development hell for some time... this map will attempt to recreate one of the most tragic battles of WWII, and pay tribute to the 1,077 allied sailors who sacrifieced their lives to stop Imperial Japan from invading Australia.

THEATER OF WAR: Pacific

CAMPAIGN: Solomon Islands

LOCATION: Solomon Islands, around Savo Island, just north of Guadalcanal

DATE: August 8, 1942

HISTORY:

Following Japan's decisive defeat at the Battle of Midway 2 Months earlier, the Imperial Japanese Navy is now down 4 fleet carriers and decides a change in strategy is necessary.  Realizing that the USA is out of reach, they set their aim towards an Island closer to home: Guadalcanal.  Their plan: Invade and conquer it, using it as a staging point for an Invasion of Australia.  On August 7th, the first Allied forces, primarily U.S. Marines, land on Guadalcanal, Tulagi and Florida Island, make landfall to prevent the Japanese from using these lands as bases.  The Japanese were taken by suprise, and the Imperial fleet soon started moving into the area in response.   The next evening, the first of four battles that would take place on the body of water that would eventually become known as Ironbottom Sound takes place; the Battle of Savo Island.  I'd go into further detail, but that's not important.

The map isself needs to be built.  Right now I am doing very extensive and carfeul research to ensure historical accuracy, by using the folloing pictures as referances:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6f/SavoIslandMap.jpg

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/88/SavoJapaneseChart1.jpg

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/41/SavoIslandMap2A.jpg

After some thinking, I have decided to reduce the number of American Destroyers from 15 to 8, out of fairness.

This is the Exact unit composition of the map:

Heavy Cruisers:   (All will be Takao class, even though Chokai was the only real Takao present.  Unless the actual classes are created.  The actual classes of the cruisers are listed in parenthesis)

1.    Chōkai                    (Takao Class)
2.    Aoba                      (Aoba Class)
3.    Furutaka                 (Furutaka Class)
4.    Kako                      (Furutaka Class)
5.    Kinugasa                 (Aoba Class)

Light Cruisers:  (Both will be Kuma, as that is the only Jap CL availible to us.  Unless the actual classes, in parenthesis, are considered for creation)

1.    Tenryū                (Tenryū Class)
2.    Yūbari                 (Yūbari Class)

Destroyers: (Fubuki class)

1.    Yūnagi               (Kamikaze Class)
NOTE: The Kamikaze class is closer in similarity to the Minekaze class, but I made Yūnagi a Fubuki class out of fairness.

And the Allied fleet:

Heavy Cruisers:

1.    HMAS Australia                     (County Class; make it a York class)
2.    HMAS Canberra                    (County Class; make it a York class)
3.    USS Chicago                        (Northampton Class)
4.    USS Vincennes                     (New Orleans Class, make it Northampton)
5.    USS Astoria                         (New Orleans Class; Make it Northampton)
6.    USS Quincy                         (New Orleans Class, Make it Northampton)

Light Cruisers:

1.    USS San Juan                       (Atlanta Class)
2.    HMAS Hobart                       (Leander Class; make it De Ruyter class)

Destroyers: (All are Fletcher class until their actual classes, in parenthesis, are created)

1.    USS Patterson                 (Bagley Class)
2.    USS Bagley                      (Bagley Class)
3.    USS Helm                        (Bagley Class)
4.    USS Wilson                      (Benham class)
5.    USS Ralph Talbot              (Bagley Class)
6.    USS Blue                         (Bagley Class)
7.    USS Selfridge                   (Porter Class)
8.    USS Ellet                         (Benham Class)

Now this does sound a little unfair at first, with The Japanese having 5 CAs, 2 CLs and 1 DD against 6 CAs, 2 CLs and 8 DDs.  Well, here's what I'm thinking:  First, let the modders play ten rounds with just what is here.  If: (NOTE: This is my opinion; only the modders can decide what is balanced and what is not.  These numbers are based on probabilty, logic and percentage...nothing else)

The Americans win 9 or 10 rounds, then give the Japanese 4 airfields.  The Consistancy is as follows:

Airfield 1: 30 D3As and 30 G3Ms
Airfield 2: 30 B5Ns and 30 G4Ms
Airfield 3: 30 D4Ys and 30 G4Ms
Airfield 4: 30 B5Ns and 30 G3Ms

If the Americans win 7 or 8 rounds, give the Japanese 3 airfields.  The consistancy is as follows:

Airfield 1: 30 D3As and 30 B5Ns
Airfield 2: 30 D4Ys and 30 G3Ms
Airfield 3: 30 D3As and 30 G4Ms

If the Americans win 4, 5 or 6 rounds, then the map is balanced.

If the Amercians win 2 or 3 rounds, then one submarine, S-38, will be added.  It's location will be marked on the map.

In the Americans win 0 rounds or only one rounds, then I request that the modders hold back on this map until the units in parenthesis are availible; and start this test all over again.

If the Modders are still having trouble with balancing after these suggestions, then they are free to do whatever they want... but I shall be here as a consultant if help is necessary.

Now then, the player slots are as follows:

ALLIES:

Player 1: CA CA DD DD (Astoria, Quincy, Helm, Wilson)
Player 2: CA CA DD DD (Australia, Canberra, Patterson, Bagley)
Player 3: CA CA DD DD (Vincennes, Chicago, Blue, Ralph Talbot)
Player 4: CL CL DD DD (San Juan, Hobart, Selfridge, Ellet) (NOTE: If S-38 is going to be added, Player 4 will get it)

JAPANESE:

Player 1: CA DD (Chōkai and Yūnagi)
Player 2: CA CL  (Kinugasa and Tenryū)
Player 3: CA CL  (Aoba and Yūbari)
Player 4: CA CA  (Furutaka and Kako)

In the event that the Japanese do get 4 airfields, each player gets one.  If 3 airfields, everyone but player 4 gets an airfield.

The map shall come up before Sunday garunteed.  Am I so glad this idea is finally out of Development hell... if only the same could be said for attack on Pearl Harbor.  That's it for now, please comment and hope for me that Pearl Harbor will get out of D.H. as well.

Then you are going to love this map... Now if I could just get guys like Admin, Katarya, and Tipsy to comment on this....oh, and my design buddy, Beast.

(WOW! (Excited, not angry) Reply number 2400 to the Midway Editors forum... I can still remember when there were less than 800!)

Re: Battle of Savo Island

Excuse me, is that comment irrelevant to this thread?  I would really appreciate it if we couldjust stick to comments and feedback on this map in this thread; I just got this map out of development hell and I want to know how it turned out.

Re: Battle of Savo Island

hmm a bit of a downer, it feels like an enlarge vela gulf without the massive amounts of islands. Personally it does have its own touches but it doesn't feel unique, personally im looking foward to a map where CV's are the decisive weapon not the heavy cruisers or battleships as in our previous incarnations of maps. Something similar to Battle of the coral sea.

I guess im looking away from the "attacker" "defender" situation to a more balanced field of play of equal terms of strength on the high seas.

*off topic* Looking at the last picture how did the American CA's get pwned?!

Re: Battle of Savo Island

I admit it needs some work.  Why don't we wait for me to get the map up before we go into negative feedback.  I fell that if created, this will be the most historically accurate map I have ever created... if I can map it out right

BTW, about what you said about the CVs... what a coincidence!  One of our projects here at TBMD, Battle of Santa Cruz, is pretty close to that concept.

Re: Battle of Savo Island

I said that I would have a map up a while ago for this concept... however I am currently having problems with my scanner (Since I can't work with photoshop, I essentially make collages by hand for my map ideas, then I scan them onto the computer)  So it may take a little while before I get this map up... and if I can't I'll just post another video.

This idea was in development hell for a long time, so I hope that this wasn't a wasted idea.

Re: Battle of Savo Island

Savo is one of my fovourite historical battles. Serious disaster for allies, they ignored messages about incoming japanese fleet, commander Crutchley in wrong place, totally surprised cruiser Chicago and no information to the other ships was sent, very good trained japanese seamans (especially for night fight), long lances on japanese ships. Many reasons - and the final - japanese victory. Hope we can play this map in the future.

Re: Battle of Savo Island

Thanks... I plan to release a video proposing this map soon, much like what I did with Operation Ten-Go.  I figured that it would be better than just words on a forum

  • Legendary Da : Hi everyone, I have one (or two) quick question about BS:M modding. I try to figure out sp mapmaking, and my first act on it was to convert a MP map to SP. However I can only play as Allies in those maps. What parameter do I have to change to play those maps as Japanese in the respective map .mpak (And where is the parameter I have to change?)?
  • N_Trainz : G'day mates, I just wanted to let those who use Windows 10 and also for those who are having troubles getting the game launching because of Games for Windows LIVE, I made a tutorial of how to get it working successfully again like on Windows 8.1. Its on my channel and here's the link to the video. «link»
  • Mokeo67 : The dictator, I downloaded the mmod2txm and I added four slots to the fletcher and a couple to the lexington. Thanks for the help though.
  • The Dictator : Makeo67 i've explained how to find the unused slots in the topic and the mmod2txm it's a program that has been shared. However there aren't so many ships with unused platforms and sme of them are in wrong positions and for move them you need to know how to change the mmod file. But if you know how to do it you can make new platfors as you want. I've shared the south dakota disposition and this one is the most intersting in my opinion
  • N_Trainz : Well it looks like we have spammers again
  • Mokeo67 : No problem Thanks for the help
  • Axis_Crusher : Not really
  • Mokeo67 : Ok thanks anyway. Do you know who does?
  • Axis_Crusher : Unfortunately I don't deal with that part of modding
  • Mokeo67 : Sorry forgot the link. «link»
  • Mokeo67 : This is the forum topic I meant. The dictator said he found the unused slots in the TXM file obtainable with the mmod2txm, what is this and is it available to use.
  • Axis_Crusher : This is your best bet: «link»
  • Mokeo67 : Also I saw on the forum that ships have unused platform slots. How do I use these?
  • Mokeo67 : I tried changing the bogue class carrier to a yorktown class in the phillipene sea mission and one of two things happened. The mission either didnt change or the game crashed.
  • Axis_Crusher : No problem
  • Mokeo67 : That is what im talking about. Ill have a look at it later thanks for the help
  • Axis_Crusher : specific mission’s 3_scene mpak file by working on the .lua file. There is where the bonus unit is actually added into the mission (by the script). I haven't tried it myself so good luck.
  • Axis_Crusher : I assume you are talking about the bonus units that you unlock for certain missions by completing previous ones (like the B - 25’s in the 2nd Battle of Guadalcanal). The bonus units are unlocked by completing certain objectives in the campaign - so that is linked to your campaign progress. Since that cannot be altered you must look at the missiontree.lua file. This is where the unit will show up unlocked on the mission screen. There are references to allunitslock. Also you will have to edit the
  • Mokeo67 : Thank you I will look in this file. I did unlock all the campaign missions, all you have to do is delete the text after 'prerequisite' and it will unlock. But I havent figured out how to unlock the bonus units.
  • Axis_Crusher : I also prefer it being off, just as most of the BSM community. Most players, however prefer repair to be enabled so that is what we should do. Most of our maps it will be disabled through the script however. If you want to play with the game's repair settings you can find it under shipglobals.lua
