Re: What is the most effective Jap strategy for Cape Engano?

Generally speaking, the most effective strategy would be: (In my opinion)

Go on defense at first; and stay on defense until the New Jersey, the sub, and 1/2 of the surface fleet is destroyed.  After that, with whatever units are left standing, you move in on the carriers and deliver the Coup de Grace.

Re: What is the most effective Jap strategy for Cape Engano?

It depends on the enemy. In fact - everything is clear after the fight of battleships. And only Yamato can destroy NJ. So - best advice: do not chase the enemy battleship. Everything else is OK ab

Re: What is the most effective Jap strategy for Cape Engano?

ill run through all the options described.

Japs send cas south, west of island to ambush cvs

this will work only once if the opposing player(s)  is competent.
After this has happened so said competent player(s) will compensate by having either iowa intercept the cas or, the better option, use dauntlesses to anihilate the cas, effectively giving the us a naval superiorety (yamato vs iowa and us ca).
this combined with the fact that yamato will have to close in to the cvs (and the rest of us  fleet) without the cas will leave yamato more open to air attack.

in my oppinion is a tactic that like i sayed only works once. if tryed a second time on the same opponents then it will probably be a failing tactic.

Japs go on all out attack south (no defense)

In theory with the cas accompanying the Yamato it will reduce the damage done by planes to all ships
(if they all group together closely) because of the large aa screen made by all the ships.
the dwonside to this tactic is that the us cvs are able to sail behind the island thus increasing the amount of time it needs for the yamato to reach them.It becomes even worse when the us fleet decides to go for the jap arifields. Add to this that the iowa can try to pound the escort ships sailing in front of yamato without actually getting in the yamatos range and you again have a losing tactic.
(this can even be done to the yamato itself with the range adavantage trick that so many, like myself, hate)

Japs go on defense and withdraw all ships to airfields

(put this one up last because in my opinion its the better tactic. mind you , its far from perfect)
if the yamato (and the cas) parks itself very close to the norhtern (weaker) airfield it can act as extra aa for the field in case the opposing players try to bomb it. likewise being so close to the fields will help keep the yamato safe afrom air attacks as well. as sson as a smaller ship (dd,cl,ca) trys to attack the airfields yamato should maneuver to bring its guns to bare and destroy the thread.Keep this up untill iowa try's to attack and kill him ussing the short distance between him and your airfields to bomb him with some torpedoes while the yamato and the cas engage it.
after this is the cvs can be attacked.

this tactic should be the most succesfull providing all airfields stay alive (not to mention the yamato).
but it will be a very long game if the us decides to use up all its planes before heading in with the ships.
not to mention that the us can actually move its cariers closer to the jap base once they realise that the japs arent going to attack at all, (not to close of couse, that would be dumb) using they're air superiorety to the max.

Japs give up
you can always give up after all other tactics fail ad ae

either way

cape engano is a hard level for the japanese no matter what tactic is used.

Re: What is the most effective Jap strategy for Cape Engano?

US have advantage with planes. But this advantage is small - only 3 squadrons - and japan side have very good AA.
I think the key for japan side is the good use of AA. Yamato must stay behind CLs and DDs. CLs are not so easy to suck with planes. And US side lost a lot of them to suck 2 CLs and 2 DDs. If they attack Yamato, US will lost a lot of planes too. But Yamato will have little damade because japan CLs have good light AA. Of course japan side must launch all fighters he can.

Finaly, when Yamato can fire the New Jersey, CAs and CLs can attack and run over the New Jersey. Because New Jersey can't fire Yamato and CAs and CLs in the same time. So : if NJ fire Yamato, CAs and CLs will probably able to suck CVs. If NJ fire CAs and CLs, he will be suck by Yamato. No way for US side if good use of AA for japan side. If Yamato isn't able to attack NJ and wait and wait, at the end US side will be empty of planes. And of course lost.

I used this strategy several time for japan side, and it works very well. In fact i think the advantage is for Japan side. But need good team strategy (or play alone) and good game play with AA.

So : good players will win with japan side !

You don't win with Japan side ? lol !

Maybe i have forget something : the sub. This unit is probably the key for US side (if planes and NJ are good used). But he isn't easy to use because he is in bad position at beginning. Again : you need to be a good player to do a good use of this unit and make damadge to Yamato with sub and give the victory for US.

The designer opinion. ab

Re: What is the most effective Jap strategy for Cape Engano?

I won with the jap side with good players on my side

but ill sum up the disadvantages of charging the us carriers (with our without the cas near yamato)

1. as the jap main fleet charges the us cvs it will put a lot of distance between it and the jap airfields whilest closing on the us carriers. this way attacking planes are spawned close while defending fighters have to come from far away making it harder for japan to defend the air.

2. the sub can be used to damage the yamato once planes killed off al destroyers.

3. whilest charging the cvs iowa can try to attack the smaller ships in front of yamato without getting in the yamatos range. when this happens the only thing the japanese can do is  back up the smal ships in front of yamato, leaving it more vulnerable to air-attacks or watch them get pounded till they die.
(this can even be done to the yamato itself with the range adavantage trick that so many, like myself, hate)

im not saying its impossible but I am saying its hard when US has good players using all advantages they got to the max.

Re: What is the most effective Jap strategy for Cape Engano?

It's not about strategy. It's about environment on Engano. Probably only me and Velcor knows that, where did the idea for Engaño environment.

I said to him - let's change something in environment (first version was close to Surigao Strait).
He told me - Okay - i want something like this (and he sent me a photo)

http://battlestations.eu/components/com_agora/img/members/4/mini_040118ph125.jpg

After some researches we have new Engano environment. You can judge yourself, how close to that photo is existing Engano environment. Velcor can say more about photo (if he wants, of course ab )

BTW: I really like cooperation with him about any changes in skins, design or environment. Always when i say that: hey - look, we can change it, he answer: Great, let's change it ab

Re: What is the most effective Jap strategy for Cape Engano?

It's a very nice picture, beautiful sunset....but I think Engano has more Palm trees than in the picture, which are of course deciduous judging by the lack of leafs.

Best Jap tactic....probably is to just wait at the home islands. Good japs pilots will obliterate every single wave of dauntless that approach the airfield, not to mention the heavy aa from the ships and land installations combined. Then the Americans will then try to send in a couple of destroyers, which probably will get obliterated by decent Jap DD and CA captains plus the fortesses. The Iowa and CA's will hang about and not do too much, until the US get frustrated and try to attack Yamato & Co. But, becuase the US destroyers got thumped trying to attack the airfelds, there will be only Iowa and CA's. Torpedo bombers from the CV's will be useless because of the islands blocking Yamato & Co, and the heavy aa cover. The sub is totally useless in this scenario, it will just get annihalated by the land based gun positions, or sunk by DD.

Having said that, I have only seen Yamato beat Iowa twice on this map, out of about 10 games - probably poor captaincy.

As Japs, you have to hope for poor captaincy from the US players. Although a sneaky Kuma class or Jap DD or both, east and then south, is good way of distracting dd's and maybe the Northampton from defence of CV's or attack on the southward rushing Yamato & Co and can split the US forces.

The biggest thumping I have had on this map, is as an American, and playing against EST IJN and another guy - can't remember his name, they just hung around the islands - then as G4D said, the CV's got too close to the home islands, and got sunk by CA's.

Either way, all team players on both sides need to know what their role is and what the team is planning to do, so a good leader like EST is required, especially when playing against EST himself. If not - your dead.

That's what I think anyway.

What did you have for dinner last night? I'm having chicken Fajitas this evening!

Re: What is the most effective Jap strategy for Cape Engano?

i just played sibuyan sea
the oppenent was nikola (no offense , nickola, gg just now) i group my amato and chikuma in to one fleet with the dds and mushashis and dd into another, he just threw his iarforce at the ships, allowing me to assemble an air force (although i didnt ag), i sent the midget subs, both sank, the 2 us subs also sank. both bbs cracked their hulls, chikuma sank due to my carelessness (or lag, idc ag) new jersey and iowa fell under my control of yamato and musashi respectively, then, fearing that the cv will escape, i ganged all the toprpedo bombers (2 airfeld about 20+ planes, it was massive ag) and threw it and that carrier, nikola was controlling it so i didnt do a lot of damage. we wre about to get into range when he quitted.
Great game nikola!

  • Legendary Da : Hi everyone, I have one (or two) quick question about BS:M modding. I try to figure out sp mapmaking, and my first act on it was to convert a MP map to SP. However I can only play as Allies in those maps. What parameter do I have to change to play those maps as Japanese in the respective map .mpak (And where is the parameter I have to change?)?
  • N_Trainz : G'day mates, I just wanted to let those who use Windows 10 and also for those who are having troubles getting the game launching because of Games for Windows LIVE, I made a tutorial of how to get it working successfully again like on Windows 8.1. Its on my channel and here's the link to the video. «link»
  • Mokeo67 : The dictator, I downloaded the mmod2txm and I added four slots to the fletcher and a couple to the lexington. Thanks for the help though.
  • The Dictator : Makeo67 i've explained how to find the unused slots in the topic and the mmod2txm it's a program that has been shared. However there aren't so many ships with unused platforms and sme of them are in wrong positions and for move them you need to know how to change the mmod file. But if you know how to do it you can make new platfors as you want. I've shared the south dakota disposition and this one is the most intersting in my opinion
  • N_Trainz : Well it looks like we have spammers again
  • Mokeo67 : No problem Thanks for the help
  • Axis_Crusher : Not really
  • Mokeo67 : Ok thanks anyway. Do you know who does?
  • Axis_Crusher : Unfortunately I don't deal with that part of modding
  • Mokeo67 : Sorry forgot the link. «link»
  • Mokeo67 : This is the forum topic I meant. The dictator said he found the unused slots in the TXM file obtainable with the mmod2txm, what is this and is it available to use.
  • Axis_Crusher : This is your best bet: «link»
  • Mokeo67 : Also I saw on the forum that ships have unused platform slots. How do I use these?
  • Mokeo67 : I tried changing the bogue class carrier to a yorktown class in the phillipene sea mission and one of two things happened. The mission either didnt change or the game crashed.
  • Axis_Crusher : No problem
  • Mokeo67 : That is what im talking about. Ill have a look at it later thanks for the help
  • Axis_Crusher : specific mission’s 3_scene mpak file by working on the .lua file. There is where the bonus unit is actually added into the mission (by the script). I haven't tried it myself so good luck.
  • Axis_Crusher : I assume you are talking about the bonus units that you unlock for certain missions by completing previous ones (like the B - 25’s in the 2nd Battle of Guadalcanal). The bonus units are unlocked by completing certain objectives in the campaign - so that is linked to your campaign progress. Since that cannot be altered you must look at the missiontree.lua file. This is where the unit will show up unlocked on the mission screen. There are references to allunitslock. Also you will have to edit the
  • Mokeo67 : Thank you I will look in this file. I did unlock all the campaign missions, all you have to do is delete the text after 'prerequisite' and it will unlock. But I havent figured out how to unlock the bonus units.
  • Axis_Crusher : I also prefer it being off, just as most of the BSM community. Most players, however prefer repair to be enabled so that is what we should do. Most of our maps it will be disabled through the script however. If you want to play with the game's repair settings you can find it under shipglobals.lua
