Since december 2012 Battlestations: Midway is supported by GameSpy no longer. The only one possibility for Midway players is GameRanger. Please visit www.gameranger.com, download Gameranger client and make new account. You can find other Midway players in the Gameranger rooms. BS:M patch 1.1.1 is required to play online battles. Iowa Mission Pack and Midway Modders Mappacks 1 and 2 are recommended.

Battlestations Midway and Battlestations Pacific

Hello there, fellow players !
It has come to my mind to create such a topic depicting the main difference between BS:M and BS:P and by this way find out why the modding community is so much developed for Midway and so poor for Pacific.
Each has its cool stuff and bad stuff, and for playing Pacific and owning Midway, I think I can list a few of the main oppositions:

Midway :
-No auto-aim
-(from what I understood) cool multiplayer gameplay
-Old graphics

Pacific
-Auto-aim (no liked by most players)
-Multiple multiplayer gameplay (not liked by BS:M modders and players)
-Improved graphics and stuff
-New features (Seaplane launchers, multiplayer with bots, new units...)

What's the Midway gameplay features that lacks in Pacific ? I think there's the auto aim stuff but it is mainly the multiplayer gamemode that grips...
How is it played ? You have selected units and fight with them until one side is down or is there a reinforcement system ? I have Midway but I don't play multiplayer on it so I need more info on what the community could need from a Battlestations Pacific modding team

hello Oomperial,

I'm primarely a BSM player.
Before BSP came out i was very excited about it because i thought i would besicly be BSM with better grafix;

but in stead Eidos gave us a disapointing alternative to BSM.

i'll sum up what most of us here think is bad about BSM

1 Like you said, The auto aim, thats one of the main isseu's with BSP
   In eidos strugle to make BSP a more casual game they eliminated any need for skill.
   It makes no difference if you played the  game for months or you just started, everyone aims just as good because the computer aims for everyone
   both with ship artillery and the target lead indicator that the planes use
2. All vehicles maneuver more sluggish. especially the planes suffer from this.
   it also makes the game slower in general. To an extent that it makes BSP boring compared to BSM
3. There are a lot of multiplayer gametypes, but usually the only one played online is island capture and that one is broken with its infinte unit respawn.
4. For all the multiplayer modes it has, it does not have the original BSM like mode where you get nothing but your start units and must complete an objective with your fleet.
5. Its a very unstable game, scrashing often or refusing to boot.
   on top of this Eidos Hungary has been closed down by its new owner Square Enix, so there is no hope of these stability isseus to be resolved.

these are the main isseus that most BSM players have with BSP.

Funny thing is, in Eidos's quest to make BSP apeal to the main stream
1. they actually ignored the BSM players
2. the BSM players where the only ones interested in BSP to begin with
3. once BSP came out no one but the BSM players cared
4. but they where disapointed and didn't play BSP

5. now no one plays BSP any more.

Okay I'm trying to mod Pacific in a lot of way and since Midway is more appreciated than Pacific, I'll take as much possible ideas from here...

1- The auto aim

= Since you can manually aim or auto aim, I have (maybe) a little hope to disable it if it's not hard coded, but not sure ac

- Target lead indicator

= Can be removed in the engine.(Yay !)

2. - All vehicles maneuver more sluggish.

=For the ships I don't feel it like a problem, as it is mostly realistic stuff. But I agree for the planes.

- especially the planes suffer from this.

= Plane speed could be changed (except the Mustang pack two units). I'll see what's the plane speed on Midway to adjust.

3. There are a lot of multiplayer gametypes, but usually the only one played online is island capture and that one is broken with its infinite unit respawn.

=I agree so much, I'll try to change that...Not in my skills possibilities for the moment.

4. For all the multiplayer modes it has, it does not have the original BSM like mode where you get nothing but your start units and must complete an objective with your fleet.

= If possible, I'll really like to try to make Midway-style multiplayer maps. Not only to please Midway players, but because it's really a strategic gamemod...Not in my skills possibilities for the moment.

First of all - you got the Midway players point. Hope your first steps brings more co-workers to that project. BSP Midway style mod will be great and - personally for me - it will be really good reason to play it again.

I think and I believe that everything about gameplay is described in LUA files. IMO Exe contains only some global info, for example sound and models converter, GFWL support, shaders support, some unpackers for MPAK and other used fileformats, LUA interpreter and others. But gameplay = LUA.

Planes - yes. Ships aren't problem (IMO).

I have some problems (unexpected crashed) with both. Not so often. I can accept that.

Personally i'm thinking it's more "single player" game, because Single player missions are not bad at all. That what dissapointed us is multiplayer. Eidos tried to change BSM for something like Battlefield gamestyle and they failed.

What do you think about these ? I agree for the autorepair totally unbalanced (that makes sub and plane attacks on battleship groups totally useless) and for the AA being too strong.

Mmh let me rephrase that : with the unit price, for three Zeros, you get a Fletcher. 3 zero can fight other planes and intercept high ground bombers or dakotas. A fletcher can destroy the zeros, fight other destroyers, intercept subs, torpedo ships of all kind and being auto-repaired the whole time. Yay !

Should the AA be weakened in BS:P ?

BSP is confusing, annoying and you have hardly any unit control.
Yes, the bot skirmish is good, but even without bots BSM will always be better.

Besides, turn all graphics options to high and turn on vsync and you got youself a pretty looking BSM. ae

  • The Dictator : Makeo67 i've explained how to find the unused slots in the topic and the mmod2txm it's a program that has been shared. However there aren't so many ships with unused platforms and sme of them are in wrong positions and for move them you need to know how to change the mmod file. But if you know how to do it you can make new platfors as you want. I've shared the south dakota disposition and this one is the most intersting in my opinion
