Please visit www.gameranger.com, download Gameranger client and make new account. You can find other Midway players in the Gameranger rooms. BS:M patch 1.1.1 is required to play online battles. Iowa Mission Pack and Midway Modders Mappacks 1 and 2 are recommended.

2 map ideas

2 map ideas

Hello there everyone

I noticed that there is a feature that allows you to construct a map of your own on the downloads page.
Unfortunatley, I cant download it for some reason.  Instead, I will do the next bes thing, explain my ideas, and hopefully an expierienced player, a guy who knows his way around this site, or maybe even a great map constructor will read this post and reply.  So, anyway, I would like to tell all of you my 2 ideas for possible new Midway maps.

IDEA #1: The Tokyo Express (NOTE: This idea is now scrapped, but youre free to read the proposal anyway)

HISTORY: During the later half of 1942, the United States was fighting the Guadalcanal campaign.  Japan had just suffered the embarrasing defeat at Midway, and decided to look for somewhere else to invade.  Guadalcanal would be the staging point for an eventual planned invasion of Austrailia.  However, the Japanese Army, over time, would need to be constantly resupplied and reenforced.  Thats where the Tokyo Express comes in.  Essentially, it was a nickname for the supply convoys that Supplied the Japanese troops on Guadalcanal.

MAP CONCEPT:  So, Im thinking that the map itself would be all water, no Islands.

The American objective is to sink the Japanese Merchant ships.

So, the Japanese Merchant fleet would consist of about...30 ships.

Specifically:

15 cargo ships

5 fleet oilers

5 troop transports

5 LSTs.

The Japanese objective is to ensure the survival of at least one of the 30 ships.

The merchant fleet will start on the Western-most side, at roughly point A-5, and they have to make it to the other side, point J-5.

After the fleet is destroyed or makes it to the other side, the objective changes; To locate and sink the enemy carriers, on both sides. I will explain how the carriers fit into this map later.

AMERICANS: To accomplish their mission, the Americans will have quite a variety of weapons at their disposal.

Players one and two will each have 2 CAs, both Northampton-class, and 2 DDs, both Fletcher class.

Players 3 and 4 will each have a CV, Yorktown class, w/ 42 fighters, 42 Divebombers, 42 Torpedo Bombers.

In addition, they will also have 1 CL, Atlanta class for player 3, Cleveland class for player 4, and 2 DDs each, both Fletcher class.

The Americans will have their fleet divided into two parts.

Players one and two, the CA fleet, Will start at point G-3.  The carrier fleet will be at point I-2.

JAPANESE:  To defend the merchant convoy, the Japanese will have the following hardware:

Players one and two will  each have 2 CAs, one Mogami class, one Takao class, and 2 DDs, both Fubuki class.

Players 3 and 4 will each be assigned 1 CV, player 3 an Akagi-class, player 4 a Soryu-class.

As for support, each will have 1 CA, both are Tone class, and 2 DDs, both are Fubuki class.  This carrier fleet will be located roughly at point B-8

UNITS:

Americans:

Player 1: CA CA DD DD

Player 2: CA CA DD DD

Player 3: CV CL DD DD

Player 4: CV CL DD DD

Japanese:

Player 1: CA CA DD DD

Player 2: CA CA DD DD

Player 3: CV CA DD DD

Player 4: CV CA DD DD

MISSION:

AMERICANS: The Americans are tasked with sinking the convoy, and, if possible, its escorts.  Should the Americans suceed in sinking the whole convoy, they will then be tasked woth locating and sinking the Japanese carriers.

JAPANESE: The Japs are tasked with defending the Merchant Convoy, ensuring the survival of at least one of the 30 ships.  Should they suceed in defending the convoy, their mission is to locate and sink the enemy carriers

Put simply, either way, the fight will involve, at the end, sinking the carriers.  The 1st team to sink the enemy carriers will win.

IDEA #2: Operation: Ten-Go

HISTORY: By April 1945, the Americans had landed on Okinawa, and were fighting to control it, as a staging ground for the final invasion of Japan itself (The invasion itself, codnamed operation Downfall, never happened).  Desperate to push the Americans off Okinawa, the Japs, launched their final offensive of the war that involved the Imperial Japanese Navy: Operation Ten-go.  Ten Imperial Warships; the Battleship Yamato, the light cruiser Yahagi and 8 Destroyers.  The mission was to beach the Yamato on the shore of Okinawa, to act as an invicible fortress to the enemy.  Unfortunatley for them, Task force 58, which included 11 aircraft carriers, sent 386 aircraft to intercept Yamato.  They sucedded, and sank Yamato, Yahagi, and 4 of the 8 destoyers escorting Yamato.

MAP CONCEPT: Ok, so Im thinking that for the 1st time in Battlestations: Midway there should be a map that is historicly accurate.  However, If I did that it wouldnt be fair, so I'll aim for 80%.

AMERICANS: Now the Real Task Force 58 consisted of 11 Carriers.

However, since 11 doesn't divide evenly into 4, I'll reduce it to 8.

As for the Carrier's names, well lets face it, one of them definately has to be Enterprise.  Although Midway doesn't have the Essex-class carrier, that doesn't mean we can't name the carriers after them.

So, for the other 7 carriers, we'll use Essex, Yorktown (CV-10, not to be confused with CV-5), Intrepid, Hornet (CV-12, not to be confused w/ CV-af, Bennington, Bunker Hill and Hancock (Please dont crack any jokes relating to the last one's name).

Each carrier will be capable of launching 30 F4Fs, 30 SBDs and 30 TBFs.

Anyway, each of the 4 American players will be assigned 2 carriers, as well as 1 CA (Northampton class, for players one and 2) or one CL (Cleveland-class for player 3, Atlanta class for player 4) and 2 DDs (Both Fletcher class, all players).

JAPANESE:  For fairness, this is where I start bending the rules of Historical Accuracy a little.
Players one and two will each have the Yamato fleet divided among them.

Player 1 will have Yamato, and 4 DDs

Player 2 Will have the Light Cruiser Yahagi and 4 DDs.

Now, here's the part where I allow fairness.
Player 3 Will control 4 airfeilds.

Airfeild 1 will have 30 G4Ms, 30 B5Ns and 30 A6Ms.

Airfeild 2 will have 30 G4Ms, 30 KI-43s and 30 B5Ns.

Airfeild 3 will have 30 G3Ms, 30 D4Ys and 30 A6Ms.

Airfeild 4 Will have 30 G3Ms, 30 KI-43s and 30 D3As.

Player 4 will have 3 Shipyards.
Shipyard 1 will be able to launch Mogami CAs, Fubuki DDs and Type B subs.
Shipyard 2 will be able to launch Takao CAs, Shimakaze DDs and Kuma CLs.
Shipyard 3 will be able to launch Tone CAs, Minekaze DDs and Type B subs.

(NOTE: The shipyards arrangement has been altered.  Keep an eye out for my map video for the changes)

The American Fleet will be along the Northeasten most part of the map, roughly point I-2
(NOTE: The location has been changed, my video will be up by the end of the week if everything goes to plan)
The Japanese fleet will start at point A-2, thats where Yamato is. An ilsand will be located at point E-10.

Thats where the shipyards and Airfeilds will be, and also the destination for Yamato.

MISSION:

AMERICANS.  The American mission is simple at 1st, to sink Yamato.  After that, it gets a little complicated.  The Americans then have to locate the Jap Island and destroy the airfeilds and shipyards.

JAPANESE: The mission is simple, defend Yamato long enough for it to reach the Island.  If it doesnt, then avenge it by sinking the American Carriers.  If the Yamato survives, the congratulations, you have one more weapon to sink the carriers, if you can get them in range of her 18.1 inch guns.

Well, those are my ideas, please reply and say what you think.  I think I got the 80% accuracy I hoped for in that second map, do you?

Re: 2 map ideas

I'm just tired today and i should go sleep, but I promise to read your post next morning carefully.

Just please remember one side (USA or IJN) can manage max 20 units. It's not our invention, it's Battlestations: Midway limitation (max 5 units per player). My next answer in this thread at morning ab Sorry ab

Re: 2 map ideas

Ack, the huge wall of text is killing my eyes! Please space it with paragraphs ><.

On to the first map.

so what your saying is this...

America
P1: CA DD DD
P2: CA DD DD
P3: CV CL DD DD
P4: CV CL DD DD

Japan
P5: CA CA DD DD
P6: CA CA DD DD
P7: CV CA DD DD
P8: CV CA DD DD

So in short whoever sinks the other sides CV wins. From the looks of it already, the Japanese forces have naval superiority from the start with 6 CA's compared to the 2 Americans + one Cleveland class, and the single Atlanta cant be everywhere for air defense.

So if the Japanese fleet does get into combat range the Americans are screwed. so pretty much the only strategy for the Americans is a suicide attack at the Japanese carriers and hopefully take them out in the first wave of attacks.

Your 2nd map however sounds a lot better, though that one I cant wait to try out ^^.

Re: 2 map ideas

(This reply is for tipsy)  Ok, thanks for the comments.  Sorry about the "Wall of text," Ill be careful of that from now on.
And about that "Unfair advantage" you saw, you must have misread something, because I said , for American players 1 and 2 , TWO Northampton CAs

Re: 2 map ideas

I read your post now and i want to add something.

First map:
Another problem is - i'm not sure it's possible to make battle phases (something like Raid on Truk single player) in multiplayer mode. After all - You should try to use our empty map template and draw your map. It helps alll other users to get your concept.

After all - map is unbalanced a little with all these japansese CAs. 6 japan CAs vs 4 USA CAs - the result of that battle can be only one. Only Tone class (Chikuma) japan CA is compared to Northampton class. Takao and Mogami are much stronger than Northampton. Also with this game limitation (max 5 units per player) it give us the map is impossible to create.

Okay

Second map looks really good. Im just a little scared about map balancing. Yamato needs 40 torps to sink her. And with all these zeroes and escort ships this will be a hard job to do. Whatever, You have my voice here, and after playing this map we can try to balance this map. Hovewer, it stilll needs a graphic diagram .

congratulation Triviaman

I love your idea , my favorite battle is the second . but the problem in the 1er battle there is a lot of CA's jap , so it's will be very hard for the american to win

Re: 2 map ideas

Ok guys thanks for the comments.  Seeing as you are all reacting negatively to the 1st idea, Ill scrap that one and focus on Operation: Ten-go.  BTW, please understand that I am not as expierienced as all of you, so of couse my ideas are...er...a little dum.  Anyway, please also understand that I only created this map the way I did because I noticed that while the maps on Midway are fun, they lack historical accuracy.  But since historicly accurate maps would be unfair, I decided to go with plan B: 80% accuracy.  The Yamato force is accurate, as is the general idea of the map, however, i did take some liberties:
.Reducing Task force 58 from 11 carriers to 8, since 11 doesnt go evenly into 4
.Giving the Japs airfeilds and shipyards for increased fairness.

Long post short, I am scrapping my 1st idea, and focusing on developing the second.  And also, I am not a very expierienced map builder, I just suggested what I did so that there could be maps that are historicly accurate, or at least 80% anyway.

Re: 2 map ideas

These 80% of historical accuracy its a good choice. At least we need some fun ab

Just try to draw a diagram of your map (Operation Ten-go) then publish it here. Use some published map concepts as a template. And... done ab

At this moment we have some map projects, but new ideas are still welcome here ae

And don't be scared, we always can balance map a little after first tests...

Re: 2 map ideas

Ok guys, after analyzing the feedback, and deciding to scrap my 1st idea and focus on deveoping the second, I decided, that since I cant use the create map template for some reason, Ill do the next best thing: explain the map format in great detail.  Ill try to figure out another way to "draw" the map.  Is it possible to post videos on this site?  If it is, Ill make a video and post it here.  Can that work out?

  • Legendary Da : Hi everyone, I have one (or two) quick question about BS:M modding. I try to figure out sp mapmaking, and my first act on it was to convert a MP map to SP. However I can only play as Allies in those maps. What parameter do I have to change to play those maps as Japanese in the respective map .mpak (And where is the parameter I have to change?)?
  • N_Trainz : G'day mates, I just wanted to let those who use Windows 10 and also for those who are having troubles getting the game launching because of Games for Windows LIVE, I made a tutorial of how to get it working successfully again like on Windows 8.1. Its on my channel and here's the link to the video. «link»
  • Mokeo67 : The dictator, I downloaded the mmod2txm and I added four slots to the fletcher and a couple to the lexington. Thanks for the help though.
  • The Dictator : Makeo67 i've explained how to find the unused slots in the topic and the mmod2txm it's a program that has been shared. However there aren't so many ships with unused platforms and sme of them are in wrong positions and for move them you need to know how to change the mmod file. But if you know how to do it you can make new platfors as you want. I've shared the south dakota disposition and this one is the most intersting in my opinion
  • N_Trainz : Well it looks like we have spammers again
  • Mokeo67 : No problem Thanks for the help
  • Axis_Crusher : Not really
  • Mokeo67 : Ok thanks anyway. Do you know who does?
  • Axis_Crusher : Unfortunately I don't deal with that part of modding
  • Mokeo67 : Sorry forgot the link. «link»
  • Mokeo67 : This is the forum topic I meant. The dictator said he found the unused slots in the TXM file obtainable with the mmod2txm, what is this and is it available to use.
  • Axis_Crusher : This is your best bet: «link»
  • Mokeo67 : Also I saw on the forum that ships have unused platform slots. How do I use these?
  • Mokeo67 : I tried changing the bogue class carrier to a yorktown class in the phillipene sea mission and one of two things happened. The mission either didnt change or the game crashed.
  • Axis_Crusher : No problem
  • Mokeo67 : That is what im talking about. Ill have a look at it later thanks for the help
  • Axis_Crusher : specific mission’s 3_scene mpak file by working on the .lua file. There is where the bonus unit is actually added into the mission (by the script). I haven't tried it myself so good luck.
  • Axis_Crusher : I assume you are talking about the bonus units that you unlock for certain missions by completing previous ones (like the B - 25’s in the 2nd Battle of Guadalcanal). The bonus units are unlocked by completing certain objectives in the campaign - so that is linked to your campaign progress. Since that cannot be altered you must look at the missiontree.lua file. This is where the unit will show up unlocked on the mission screen. There are references to allunitslock. Also you will have to edit the
  • Mokeo67 : Thank you I will look in this file. I did unlock all the campaign missions, all you have to do is delete the text after 'prerequisite' and it will unlock. But I havent figured out how to unlock the bonus units.
  • Axis_Crusher : I also prefer it being off, just as most of the BSM community. Most players, however prefer repair to be enabled so that is what we should do. Most of our maps it will be disabled through the script however. If you want to play with the game's repair settings you can find it under shipglobals.lua
